 | On board TSS Rotorua, of the New Zealand Line My grandfather Sidney Clist is at front left, and his brother John at back right. John has his hand on Charles Rossiter's shoulder. Charles was a cousin of Sidney and John, and from the age of 5 was reared in their home as their brother. I think that the young man at the back left is in Sidney's wedding group photo (Gisborne, 15 Apr 1913) but I do not know who he is. Nor do we know the person standing in the middle at the back. Departed Plymouth 29 Oct 1910 for Wellington via Capetown, Fremantle, Hobart, Sydney and Auckland. This photo was found among John Clist's memorabilia.
You can see the ship in this photo. |
 | Visit to Aunt Ellen Brewer Sidney's Aunt Ellen Brewer lived at the Higher Hunthan Farm, North Curry, Somerset. The farmhouse is an ancient listed building, with portions believed to be built in the 16th and early 18th centuries. |
 | TSS Rotorua at sea, 1910 - 1917 The TSS Rotorua at sea under full steam. Location unknown.
Among its 3rd-class passengers on its maiden voyage from London were three young men from Taunton, Somerset: Sidney Clist aged 24, his brother John Clist 18, and their cousin Charles Rossiter 19, departing Plymouth on 29 October 1910. They stopped at Capetown and Hobart en route, and arrived in Wellington on 11 December 1910. You can see them on deck in this photo.
The TSS Rotorua was sunk in the English Channel on 22 March 1917.

 | SS Rotorua Passenger List 29 Oct 1910 This is the passenger list for the ship that my grandfather Sidney Clist emigrated from Somerset, England to Wellington, New Zealand in company with his younger brother John and first cousin/step-brother Charles Rossiter. |
Histories |
 | Sergeant Sidney Clist by Roger Clist My grandfather Sidney George Clist was a policeman all his working life in New Zealand. He joined the Police Force shortly after immigrating in December 1910 and served in several cities and towns in the North Island. We do not have many details within family memorabilia, but I have found several references in public archives, which I document here. |

 | Sidney Clist's album
In 1931 my grandparents Sidney and Mercy Clist left New Zealand on a 6-month trip to England. Sidney had emigrated from Shoreditch, Taunton, as a young man aged 24 in 1910 and this was their one and only trip back "home" to Sidney's parents George and Mary Clist. Sidney took his camera and compiled an album giving a record of those they visited. However, he did not label the photos very informatively, but left some clues for me to track down. This is a project waiting for more effort. |
Folios |
 | Clist Family Reunion 2010 by Roger Clist This folio comprises 115 Powerpoint slides of family history that were shown at the Clist Family Reunion held in Auckland in Dec 2010 to commemorate the emigration of Sidney and John Clist and their cousin/step-brother Charles Rossiter who departed Plymouth 29 Oct 1910 on TSS Rotorua to arrive in Wellington on 8 Dec 1910. |
Albums |
 | Sidney and Mercy Clist's UK Trip 1931 (2) In 1931 Sidney Clist was granted 6 month's leave of absence from the NZ Police Force in order to visit, along with his wife Mercy, his parents and relatives in England. This was the only time he visited the UK after emigrating in 1910 to New Zealand. It was Mercy's only trip to England. Sidney took quite a lot of photos and compiled an album, with some photos being annotated. |
