 | John and Kate Clist and family
|
 | On board TSS Rotorua, of the New Zealand Line My grandfather Sidney Clist is at front left, and his brother John at back right. John has his hand on Charles Rossiter's shoulder. Charles was a cousin of Sidney and John, and from the age of 5 was reared in their home as their brother. I think that the young man at the back left is in Sidney's wedding group photo (Gisborne, 15 Apr 1913) but I do not know who he is. Nor do we know the person standing in the middle at the back. Departed Plymouth 29 Oct 1910 for Wellington via Capetown, Fremantle, Hobart, Sydney and Auckland. This photo was found among John Clist's memorabilia.
You can see the ship in this photo. |
 | TSS Rotorua at sea, 1910 - 1917 The TSS Rotorua at sea under full steam. Location unknown.
Among its 3rd-class passengers on its maiden voyage from London were three young men from Taunton, Somerset: Sidney Clist aged 24, his brother John Clist 18, and their cousin Charles Rossiter 19, departing Plymouth on 29 October 1910. They stopped at Capetown and Hobart en route, and arrived in Wellington on 11 December 1910. You can see them on deck in this photo.
The TSS Rotorua was sunk in the English Channel on 22 March 1917.
