This is a midget postcard, on the back of which is written (by Leonard Clist) The smithy at Shoreditch nr Taunton. My Uncle George with his youngest daughter Joy - (died young). Circa 1908. George Clist is my great-grandfather, and Joy Clist's portrait is at the top right of every page in this site.

    Documents
Probate and Will for Helen Joy Clist 1935
Probate and Will for Helen Joy Clist 1935
The last Will and Testament of Helen Joy Clist of Valley View near Tiverton, Devon appointing her brother-in-law Tom Bellamy as sole Executor with distributions to two women, a missionary in Johannesburg, South Africa and two charities, with the remainder to be divided equally between Herbert Maddox, her five siblings, and two foster-brothers. Joy died on 28 Feb 1935. Probate granted 19 Mar 1935. Gross value of estate 189 16s 7p bearing a Stamp of 1 10s 0p. One of the witnesses is Ellen Bellamy, Housewife, of Shoreditch near Taunton. This will be Tom Bellamy's mother, and from this I know Ellen was living near the Ivy Cottage and explains why she is in a lot of photos with Joy and her parents. I presume Herbert Maddox was Joy's love interest.

Headstone for George and Mary Clist, and their daughter Helen Joy Clist. This photo would have been taken soon after the headstone was completed, possibly in 1936. The iron railing is no longer present, but the headstone is well preserved (2018).

Finding the Church of St Michael at Orchard Portman can be very difficult. You can see the church steeple from all around, but no roads seem to lead there. Here are maps and navigation instructions for visiting the Clist graves and homes. Click PDF button to download all pages.
