Histories |
| Grandpa James George Scarlett (b. 1862) as told by his granddaughter Bessie Clist
Found among Bessie's handwritten memorabilia. Bessie's parents Albert Thomas Scarlett (1889-1968) m. Clara Homan Mason (1889-1993) and they lived in Auckland. Grandpa lived at Arapito, Karamea, in the South Island of New Zealand. He was aged 12 when his father Daniel Scarlett and family arrived in 1874, being one of the original settlors. |

| Voyage of the Adamant, 1874 by Edwin White Rough transcript of a journal written during the Adamant's voyage from Plymouth to Nelson, New Zealand, May 1874 (awaiting OCR transcription). My great-grandfather James George Scarlett was a boy of 12 on this ship, emigrating with his siblings and parents Daniel and Harriet Scarlett. Sadly, their youngest daughter aged 1 died of bronchitis on the voyage and was consigned to the Deep. The Scarlett family was one of the founding pioneer settlors of Karamea, in the remote north-west of the South Island. It was a life of hardship. (Notes by Roger Clist, Sep 2011) |
