Barney Magee, having just ferried passengers and bicycles across the Karamea River
Barney Magee, aged 14, having just ferried 4 cyclists and 4 cycles, across the Karamea River in a boat. The passengers are: Mr Ernest Pettit and his wife, in the back seat is her sister, Mrs Walter Batty and her child. In the background, extreme right, is the house where the Magee family lived. In the centre background is the house of Bob Johnson. The small building on the right is the stable where horses were kept. The punt, which Barney Magee and his father used for heavier loads, is visible at the water level.

Photograph taken by Walter Batty circa 1920. Information from back of file print, courtesy of Alexander Turnbull Library .

The two women are sisters. Mrs Pettit was Ruby Scarlett, and Mrs Batty was Ivy Scarlett, both being younger sisters of my grandfather Albert Thomas Scarlett. The child will be Hazel Pettit, b. 17 Aug 1918. (Notes added by Roger Clist.)

    Tribute to Hazel Pettit
Five-page tribute read at Hazel Pettit's funeral, and giving a history of Hazel, her parents Ernest and Ruby, and younger sister Phyllis. The family lived on a farm in Arapito, Karamea, but Ernest died when the girls were very young. Ruby left the farm and reared the girls alone, saving hard to send both girls to study for degrees at Victoria University in Wellington. Compiled by Peter Lineham (Hazel's cousin once removed) with his handwritten annotations.
