 | Edward and Elizabeth Rossiter and family
Copies of this photo were found in the memorabilia of brothers Sidney Clist and John Clist, New Zealand, but none of the Clist descendants knew who the family was. In consultation with Ernie Wide (UK, a Rossiter connection) we have now identified each of the members of the family.
As the mother in this photo looks remarkably like my great-grandmother Mary Clist neé Quick, I had already guessed that she is Mary's older sister Elizabeth Rossiter neé Quick. The father is her husband Edward Rossiter. The eldest child is Margaret Mary b. 1882, next is Edward James (Ted) b. 1884, then John Thomas b. 1886 and Violet Elizabeth b. 1889. The youngest is Charles Rossiter b. 1891, dressed in a baby smock as was the custom in those days. Yet to come is Harry b. 1893.
Sadly, all children were orphaned just 5 years after this photo was taken, and were dispersed to uncles and aunts in the Quick family. Ted (13) and Charles (5) were reared by my great-grandparents George and Mary Clist, of Shoreditch, Taunton.

The last Will and Testament of John Thomas Rossiter of 47 Queens Road, Devizes, Wiltshire signed 22 Jul 1965 appointing the National Provincial Bank as executor. John died on 8 Jan 1971 and the National Westminster Bank renounced Probate and Letters of Administration were granted to his son Basil Henry Rossiter and daughter Freda Mary Vince. Probate granted 23 Apr 1971, gross value of estate £620. |
