Arthur Chappell

Eldest child of Harrison Chappell, born 1885 in Greta, NSW, Australia, died 1967 aged 81 years.

Jeunesse writes...

My grandfather Arthur Chappell lost his leg as a farm boy travelling with his brother in a cart at age 16. The horse bolted and his brother jumped over the back of the cart but Arthur jumped over the side and his leg was mangled by the wheel. It was a Friday and at the hospital the doctor was leaving on holiday for the weekend, so said he would treat him on the Monday. But by that time unfortunately gangrene set in and he lost his leg.

Arthur married Ivy Ireland in 1910 and they had 10 children, my father Cyril Harrison Chappell being third. He was a tailor and had rooms in Ashfield, Sydney. He could make suits and jackets to measure, and did alterations and repairs such as invisible mending. On occasion when business was light, my father would place an order for a suit or two, or even four.

On his desk he had two signs:
  • THE BEST IS THE CHEAPEST ALWAYS
  • BETTER TO PAY MORE AND BE SURE

After Ivy died in 1955, Arthur married Ivy's sister Olive who was a widow.
