Letter from Julian Clist 1974
Letter from Julian Clist 1974
This letter from Julian Clist to my father-in-law Cyril Chappell relays family details from Julian's uncle Leonard Frank Clist who states that the Shoreditch Smithy was originally part of Lord Portman's estate. I suspected that this was the case, but this is the first mention that I've encountered. Leonard's father was Frank Clist, who was third of six children, not "youngest but one" as stated. When Leonard writes of George and Mark Clist, he is referring to his uncles. When he speaks of Sidney and John Clist in NZ, they are his first cousins. Julian worked for Brinton Carpets (his mother was Anne Brinton) and he met my father-in-law Cyril Chappell of Brisbane who had a carpet business, and the question arose as to my relationship to his line of descent. This correspondence followed as a result.

John Clist (b. 1835) and his family
John Clist (b. 1835) and his family
by Roger Clist
My great-great-grandfather John Clist was born in 1835 in Hemyock, Devon. As Civil Registration of births started on 1 July 1837, we do not know his birth date. However, I have obtained his marriage certificate, which confirms he was aged 26 when he married on 3 Apr 1861. I have subsequently found from parish records that he was christened on 25 Jan 1835. But this also revealed a big surprise!
