| John Clist This is the only known photograph of my great-great grandfather John Clist, Blacksmith of Shoreditch, Taunton, who passed away in 1891 aged 56 years. The red mark is damage on my copy of the photograph. Trevor Clist (Canada) has an undamaged copy of this photograph. |
Documents |
| Marriage Certificate for John Clist and Elizabeth Manfield Married 3 April 1861 in the Parish Church, Hemyock. John Clist is a Blacksmith residing in St Mark Magdalene, Taunton. Elizabeth is a Servant living in Hemyock. Witnessed by Sarah Manfield, and "the mark of" John Manfield, Elizabeth's father. Presumably John Manfield was illiterate and unable to sign his name. His occupation is Labourer, which presumably means an agricultural worker. |

Notice lodged by Frank Clist (aged 24 at the time), one of John's sons, who was present at the death and was living at 44 Ashmead Road, St Johns, London. John is buried in Orchard Portman Churchyard, together with his wife Elizabeth. Their eldest son George and his wife Mary are buried nearby in a triple grave with their daughter Helen Joy. |

Histories |
| John Clist (b. 1835) and his family by Roger Clist My great-great-grandfather John Clist was born in 1835 in Hemyock, Devon. As Civil Registration of births started on 1 July 1837, we do not know his birth date. However, I have obtained his marriage certificate, which confirms he was aged 26 when he married on 3 Apr 1861. I have subsequently found from parish records that he was christened on 25 Jan 1835. But this also revealed a big surprise! |
Feature Articles |
| The Forge and the Ivy Cottage This page describes my fascination with two ancestral homes at Shoreditch, Taunton. The Forge was the cottage beside the old Smithy which was once occupied by George and Mary Clist and family, and then by Ted and Emily Rossiter once George and Mary had moved to their new house Ivy Cottage which was built a short distance down the road. Both homes are still there, having passed to new owners; also the old Smithy, but its use has been changed. |

| Navigating to Shoreditch and Orchard Portman Churchyard by Roger Clist Finding the Church of St Michael at Orchard Portman can be very difficult. You can see the church steeple from all around, but no roads seem to lead there. Here are maps and navigation instructions for visiting the Clist graves and homes.
